NY Bird Dog Series donates $10,000 to The Autism Center

Thinking about summer camp can bring back some of fond memories. There's nothing quite like it. The joy of being out of school and in an outdoor environment with an endless possibility of fun -- well it could bring a smile to anyone's face. That's why The Autism Center at Ontario ARC partnered with 4-H Camp Bristol Hills. So that children with autism and other developmental disabilities could have that same experience.

To make this a reality, the New York Bird Dog Series recently donated $10,000 to The Autism Center to help families send their child to camp. The Center partnered with the camp last year at the request of parents and families. Held during weekdays in July, the camp gives children with autism and other developmental disabilities the opportunity to connect with their peers while building upon their communication and social skills.

The New York Bird Dog Series is an organization that promotes timed, tournament-style hunting with dogs. The organization’s president and founder is Canandaigua resident Tom Glynn.

Annual gift wrap booth raises $30,000

Ontario ARC raised more than $30,000 at its annual Holiday Gift Wrapping Booths located at center court and Macy’s in Eastview Mall – a record breaking amount in the booth’s history.

“The booth’s success is strongly rooted in the energy of our volunteers, the commitment of our sponsors and the tremendous support we receive from the community,” says Donna Auria, Ontario ARC’s director of community relations. “Thanks to their encouragement as well as the support we received from Eastview Mall and Macy’s, this year was record breaking.”

All of the proceeds go towards the agency’s newest program, Pet Connections, an innovative, multi-faceted program connecting animals and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Ontario County. Some of the program’s highlights include people receiving animal assisted therapy – also known as “pet therapy” – and learning how to administer this creative form of therapy.

Happy belated Thanksgiving to everyone! As we do each year, Ontario ARC has kicked off the holiday season with its annual Holiday Gift Wrapping Booth at Eastview Mall. Our booth -- located between J.Crew and Clark's -- is manned by nearly 400 volunteers who help us wrap presents and spread holiday cheer. Proceeds from the booth go towards our new program, Pet Connections. This innovative, multi-faceted program connects animals and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities right here in Ontario County. We hope you'll stop by and let us help you get ready for the holiday season by wrapping your gifts.

Agency hosts first annual Aging Symposium

If you have checked out Ontario ARC's Facebook page, you'll notice that we are a pretty busy place. We always have something going -- from hosting chamber socials to offering presentations to families from national and local experts. This week, we are hosting Teens & Sexuality and another meeting of UNYFEAT Ontario Connections.

In addition, we are also hosting our first ever Aging Symposium on November 18 right here in our Main Facility (3071 County Complex Dr., Canandaigua, NY). This event begins at 8 a.m. and focuses on the challenges of senior citizens and aging individuals. It features Dr. Mary Brady, Dr. G. Allen Power, Cheryl Cramer, LSW, Mike Kephart, ABS, Laura Robinson and Jody Thomas. The seminar costs $35 to attend.

NYSID grant helps purchase equipment, continue vocational training

Putting the new machine to work!

Recently, our agency received a grant from New York State Industries for the Disabled -- or NYSID -- to help purchase a brand new liquid filling machine. This machine will not only replaced a much older one, but also greatly improve the agency's abilities to help the people we serve gain more vocational skills and greatly increase production time.

The partnership between Ontario ARC and NYSID has provided work for hundreds of people with varying disabilities for nearly three decades. Countless amounts of bottles of bath oil, geriatric shampoo, aloe body wash, skin lotion and tearless shampoo have been filled by Ontario ARC participants and then sold across NY State. These bottling operations have also given our vocational program the chance to pursue private contracts and provide even more opportunities for people with disabilities. The skills learned at these program help people find employment in community-based environments for competitive pay. Which gives National Disability Employment Awareness even more to celebrate.

Graduating into a job

Graduating from college is no doubt a landmark in any person's life. For Ron, it meant much more. About five years ago, Ron joined the agency's College Experience program at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva. This innovative program is right on campus, giving participants the opportunity to get involved in any college activity -- from student activities organizations to special interest clubs. The people who attend the program also get the advantage of auditing college classes alongside their peers. In addition, the program helps its participants expand their life, social and work skills through customized curricula and internships in any field of interest.

Ron took advantage of all of these options. He audited several classes and participated in campus life. Ron even had the chance to spend the night at the colleges' O'Dell's Village -- a townhouse complex on HWS campus. All of these event cultivated into one big event -- his completion of the College Experience program and joining his friends in the colleges' commencement exercises this past May.

But, it doesn't end there. Ron's recent internships with the Canandaigua Y's Child Watch Center turned into a job. He now works there part time and receives assistance from Abbey Employment Services through his job coach, Bonnie Ross.

This designated month puts the spotlight on the employment of people with disabilities and the valuable contributions these individuals make to America's workplace and economy. To "celebrate" via blog, we'll be introducing you to the stories of people working right here in Ontario County. Enjoy!

The crew working with LeChase Construction at FLCC

This past April, a work crew of the agency's participants assisted LeChase Construction, LCC with its cleanup operations at Finger Lakes Community College. The college recently added an 80,000-square-foot addition to its campus.

This particular work crew had their work cut out for them. The clean up was an extremely important part of the process, as the company was seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certificate system with very strict guidelines for all phases of construction -- including cleanup. The workers assisted at the site three times a week cleaning up debris inside and outside the building shell.

Geared for parents of teenagers with autism and other related diagnoses.	The Father Factor: Understanding the Special Needs of Fathers October 21, 7 p.m. Presented by Dr. Robert Naseef, this seminar will focus on the special needs of fathers and male caregivers. Attendees will be guided in discussion of raising children with autism.
Children with Special Needs & Family Life: Taking Care of Everyone's Needs October 22, 8 a.m. Join us for this half-day seminar with Dr. Robert Naseef, who will draw upon his clinical and personal experiences to address a variety of issues facing families and children with developmental disabilities.	Teens & Sexuality: The What, The Why, The When, The Where and The How November 8, 6 p.m. Get the best strategies for discussing issues around sexuality, maintaining personal safety and learn how to identify trustworthy, appropriate resources.
UNYFEAT Ontario Connections November 9, 4:30 p.m. Another meeting of this great support group for parents of teenaged children with autism or other-related diagnoses.	The Seven Senses December 3, 10 a.m. This presentation will address the sensory needs of children and teenagers with autism spectrum disorders. It will also cover tips on how to help your child be successful in situations where the environment is not sensory-friendly.

Cruisin' for a Cause raises a record $90,000!

Prior to the event this year, I had a chance to chat briefly with our executive director, Bill Castiglione, who gave me the short version of Cruisin' for a Cause's history. The first year of the event was just on the Canandaigua Lady, which can hold approximately 120 people. At this point, Steamboat Landing didn't even exist! These were the days before the live auction, silent auction and complimentary wines. As it continued to grow, the event was moved inside the restaurant's ballroom and one cruise was split into two.

Well things have definitely come a long way. Not only did 650 local resident attend this year's festivities, Ontario ARC raised more than $90,000 -- a record breaking amount in its 19th year!

And from the looks of things, attendees had a blast!

Founder of Alternative Choices -- a mental health facility in Philadelphia -- Dr. Naseef is a psychology and renowned expert. If you missed the grand opening festivities, then you are in luck -- Dr. Naseef will be returning to Ontario ARC on Oct. 21 and 22 to give additional presentations.

Companionship Program celebrates another successful year

The Companionship Program is a partnership with Erin Hopkin's second grade class at Canandaigua Primary School and participants from Ontario ARC's YMCA and Congregational Church Community Learning Centers. This was Ms. Hopkin's first year with the program and she did a superb job! She encouraged her students to learn the names of individuals and assisted with monthly projects. Erin said the parents were very pleased with the program and that their children would come home and talk about their experiences.

At the end of the school year, the Companionship Programs has a party at the Sonnenberg Garden picnic area to celebrate new friendships and wish each other well. The Centerfield Homemakers Association graciously volunteers each year and provides a lovely lunch of full of nutrious veggies, chips, hamburgers, watermelon and a choice of dessert. The Canandaigua National Bank staff returned again this year to offer their assistance as well. They set-up an activity table with choices of bracelets, rub-on tattoos and trinkets.

Thank you to all of the parents who assisted the program, the Centerfield Homemakers Association and staff from Canandaigua National Bank. What a perfect example of inclusion for the Canandaigua community!

Autism resource library open to general public

The Resource Library at The Autism Center at Ontario ARC is now open to the general public. Its wide collection of books, journals, DVDs and sensory toys are available to borrow by registering with The Autism Center.

Books are available to borrow for two weeks and DVDs are available for a one week period. Internet access and a television with DVD player are also available at the library. The library's regular hours are 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Among the library's vast collection are:

Special Children, Challenged Parents: The Struggles and Rewards of Raising a Child with a Disability by Robert A. Naseef, Ph.D.
The Game of My Life: A True Story of Challenge, Triumph and Growing Up Autistic by Jason "J-Mac" McElwain
Temple Grandin -- the HBO biopic featuring Claire Danes as renowned Dr. Temple Grandin and her challenges growing up with autism.

Community Experience Volunteers at Purple Haze Center

The Community Experience individuals volunteer at Purple Haze Center once a month. Purple Haze is located next to Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack in Farmington. The organization assists with adoption through The Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program of retired race horses. The Community Experience individuals assist with cleaning the horse stalls by wiping down the doors and bars to the stalls. We also spend time with the horses petting and feeding them peppermints. The Community Experience individuals enjoy volunteering in the community.

The individuals at the HWS College Experience like to make people happy, so this month they made lots of greeting cards for the residents at the Geneva Living Center South.

The individuals were very excited to deliver cards to another ARC participant recovering from surgery at the Living Center.

The staff at the Living Center are very grateful for the cards that the College Experience makes. They told them they really make the residents happy when they deliver the cards to them.

Ontario ARC seeks volunteers for 14th annual carnival

Ontario ARC is currently seeking volunteers for its annual Eberhardt Center’s carnival on July 21.

To assist the agency with the carnival, interested individuals must be at least 14 years old and able to work in between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Volunteers will be assigned to run games and activities, as well as assist with the set-up and break down of the carnival. The even will feature music, dancing, and festive games.

Congratulations, Barb Davis!

In our upcoming issue of ARC Life (June / July), you are going to read about many staff changes going on in the agency. One of those changes, revolves around the retirement of Barb Davis, who served Ontario ARC for 28 years. She is enjoying her first Monday morning as a retired person. Barb was the agency's director of quality assurance and staff development. But she wasn't always a director...Barb was worked in different departments within the agency, including transportation. She is always the first person to volunteer and help out whenever necessary -- a true example of Teamwork, one of the agency's Values.

And, even though she's not working here, we all know we will see Barb around -- whether she's just dropping by the Main Facility, helping out with our annual residential camp, going to the Eberhardt Carnival or visiting our participants. And, I'm sure we'll see her at the agency's major fundraiser, Cruisin' for a Cause. We all wish her the best as she enjoy this time with her friends and family.

FLCC College Experience

Every spring the FLCC College Experience individuals volunteer at Sonnenberg Gardens through the summer. This year we are volunteering two times a month, doing yard work, sweeping and on rainy days we wash windows in some of the buildings. The staff we encounter while we are there are always very pleasant and it gives us a good feeling to be helping to maintain a historic location in our local community of Canandaigua.

This year the HWS College Experience group is maintaining both gardens at the Highland Avenue, IRA. The individuals are very excited to have planted three types of gardens. They are growing an herb garden, a flower garden, and a vegetable garden.

The group waters the gardens, faithfully, and are waiting patiently for the produce and the flowers. Once the crops are in, the group is hoping to sell their products at the main ARC building and then choose a charity to donate the money to.

We would like to thank the Horticulture Group for donating some plants to us and the Highland Avenue, IRA for watering in between our visits on the extra dry days.

Blocked Exit

The Community Experience recently teamed up with the Safety Committee and made 23 blocked exit signs. The exit signs are for the Community Learning Centers, Main Facility, Eberhardt and the residential homes to use during fire drills to simulate a blocked exit. We used white fabric and a large fire shaped stencil. We then used fabric spray paint to complete the blocked exit sign. Great teamwork Community Experience and Safety Committee!

Sensory Friendly Screening of How To Train Your Dragon at Smith Opera House

NYS Assembly Leader Brian Kolb, along with The Autism Center at Ontario ARC, are sponsoring a free, sensory friendly movie screening of "How to Train Your Dragon" at the Smith Opera House on June 11, 12 p.m.

The environment is ideal for children with autism and other developmental disabilities because families will be able to watch the movie with relaxed light and low sound suited to meet their often sensitive audiovisual needs. "How To Train Your Dragon" -- which is rated PG by the MPAA -- features the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard
Butler, America Ferrara, and Kristin Wiig.

What is in store for Ron Wilson?

Ron has overcome many challenges through-out his life. Ron suffered from a brain tumor when he was younger. He went on to attend highschool and graduated. After graduation he started the HWS College Experience in April 2007.

While at the College Experience, Ron learned many social skills. Ron's favorite part of his college experience was meeting all of the HWS students. Ron audited college classes, attended many internships, and has blossomed into a responsible adult.
Ron is going to be graduating, Sunday, May 15th with the other college students. After that, Ron will be working at the Canandaigua YMCA, in the child-watch program. He is very excited to start this endeavor.

Community Experience helps United Way

Matt recently began a new volunteer opportunity at the United Way on Parkside Drive in Canandaigua. Other individuals from Ontario ARC assisted at the United Way prior to Matt starting. Matt shreds old documents every Monday for 45minutes. Matt enjoys shredding and this is a new opportunity for him to give back to the community.

FLCC College Experience

Every year here at FLCC college, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) club hosts a day of celebration, called May Day, where the students participate in small activities, get to enjoy games and recieve free items. This years themes was a carnival. Alyse, Stephanie and Jeff are members of the CAB club here at the college and volunteered by handing out shirts and cups with coupons in them for free food. They worked along side other college students in getting the morning preparations completed for the celebration in the afternoon. The annual May Day celebration was a another big success this year and we are proud to have been apart of it.

FLCC College Experience

This year the FLCC College Experience wanted to give back to the college for Arbor Day. Through a little bit of planning and a lot of help, we planted a Blooming Plum Tree here at the college. Since the college is going through a remodeling phase, we thought we could help by beautifying the grounds. With special thanks to Ryan Smith, Ontario Arc's Rehabilitation Counselor who donated the tree and Al Stetler, FLCC Landscape Maintainer who assisted us with the placement and planting the tree, can be viewed from our window where we will be able to see it grow throughout the coming years.

PBS NewsHour's Autism Now series

Last week, I accompanied our senior associate executive director Noreen Quinn and applied behavioral specialist Mike Kephart to WXXI's studios in Rochester. We were there to promote the opening our of autism center and the new, wide range of resources available to families, educators, and the community.

Our visit actually coincides with the part 5 of PBS NewsHour's Autism Now series. Robert MacNeil returns to PBS to explore the rapid increase of autism diagnoses. MacNeil shares his own personal story with autism -- his grandson Nick was diagnosed at 15 months old.

Part I, II and III are available to view online at PBS NewsHour. They are also being aired locally on WXXI Channel 21.

And, just in case you are wondering -- Noreen and Mike will appear on this Friday's episode of Need To Know Rochester at 8:30. Thanks to Steve Dawe for inviting us up to the station and bringing attention to this important issue.

Disability and the Arts Festival 2011

Through the month of April there have been many activities on the HWS campus for people with disabilities. Some have included an Abstract Art workshop, Journal writing workshops, Movement workshops and Creating Video Advertising workshops.

The individuals at the HWS College Experience have really enjoyed themselves and have met many new friends from other ARCs that have attended.

Wednesday, May 4th is the Arts Gala Finale from 5-8pm on the campus in the Vandervort Room. Every ones art will be displayed. Hope to see you there!

FLCC College Experience Helps with Day of Caring

United Way Day of Caring was another fun adventure for us this year. We signed up to volunteer and were asked to work at Sonnenberg Gardens for the day. We were given the responsibility of helping to clean the inside of the mansion, such as dusting, sweeping and vacuuming. We met some great people and really got to appreciate the beautiful mansion and gardens.

We've been hard at work in the PR / Development department, putting the finishing touches on the grand opening of The Autism Center at Ontario ARC. Yesterday, we had a great turn out with our workshop for teachers and educators. A special thank you to all to everyone who volunteered -- both staff, members of our Autism Advisory Board, and participants from our Community Experience and College Experience programs at Finger Lakes Community College and Hobart & William Smith Colleges. The Community Experience has enjoyed a pizza party in the past when we have saved enough money from their pop cans and bottles. Recently we decided to spend the money on non-perishable food for the United Ways food drive. We went shopping at Aldi's and purchased as much food as we could. We kept track of the total amount using calculators. We then delivered all the food collected by the Eberhardt Center and the Main Facility to the Zion Fellowship Church on Thursday April 14th.

One in every 110 children will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. When I first saw the number, I thought I had misread the information. But after thinking about it, I realized how many people I know that have relatives with the diagnosis. The community we live in has a need for services and supports for people with autism -- and, Ontario ARC is responding.

On April 16, the agency will hold the grand opening of The Autism Center at Ontario ARC -- a regional clearinghouse for information, sharing, referral and services. The official ribbon cutting is at 1 p.m. with special guests, including: Congressman Tom Reed, State Senator Mike Nozzolio, Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, and Assemblyman Sean Hanna.

We hope that you'll join us on April 16 for our big day. But, don't forget -- the festivities are ongoing during April 14 - 16. We'll be hosting a variety of signature presentations relating to autism spectrum disorders. Take a look at our invitation. Community Experience helps Compassionate Care Inc.

The Community Experience delivered flowers for Compassionate Care Inc. Compassionate Care Inc. is a Hospice location in Canandaigua that cares for terminally ill patients. The Community Experience picked up 120 bouquets of flowers on March 2nd at Stella's on 332. We then delivered them to 4 different schools in the Marcus Whitman School District. FLCC College Experience also helped deliver 150 bouquets of flowers to Midlakes High School. Shelly Jensen, Habilitation Supervisor delivered 160 to the main facility. Prior to the delivery Abbey Day Hab. CLC sold the bouquets at $8.00 each. Thank you to all those who participated in this volunteer opportunity.

Learning to ride Public Transportation

The closer individuals get to graduation and plan for work in the community, the question
that comes up is "how will I get there?" Riding the public transportation, CATS, is something that we work on, here at program. The individuals learn how to ride the bus and the necessary steps it takes to get to and from different locations around the county.

By the time graduation approaches, most individuals can ride the bus by themselves and will be able to navigate around the county. The individuals have a sense of ful-fillment once they have mastered riding the CATS bus. This confidence boost will continue on in other aspects of their lives.

FLCC College Experience active in volunteering

This month FLCC sponsored a United Way event called "The Taste of the Finger Lakes". Joe Nairn, Executive Assistant to the President, put us right to work putting together the pledge forms for the faculty and staff here at the college. We then began hanging the United Way posters around the college and distributing table tent fliers throughout the lounges and cafeteria areas. We then also worked the day of the event by collecting admission and stamping hands. We really enjoyed working the event and seeing new and old friends.

Baking for the Loaf and Laddle

Early this month, the HWS College Experience group made several dozen, gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. They donated them to the Granger Homestead, to be used for the Loaf and Laddle fundraiser, which is a lunch and dinner event.

The Loaf and Laddle is an event the Granger Homestead sponsors each year. They put together lunches and dinners for the people to purchase throughout the community. Because some of the individuals in the HWS College Experience are familiar with food allergies, they thought it would be nice to make gluten-free cookies.

Teamwork made the baking possible. The individuals were excited to deliver the cookies to the Granger Homestead, knowing they were helping someone else.

Our friends in Student Life, here at the college, participated in raising funds for the annual polar plunge. Again this year, we were invited to partner with them in raising the money for the FLCC team. We jumped at the chance to help out! The Polar Plunge is held every year to raise funds for the Special Olympics of New York. With the team's hard work, we helped them raise $1140 this year. The polar plunge was held Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Charlotte Beach in Rochester, N.Y.

The Community Experience has been collaborating with Cobblestone Arts Center and the Pathways program every Friday for seven weeks. Cobblestone Arts Center is a non profit organization offering dance, theater, music, and visual arts to people of all ages and abilities. Throughout the seven weeks indviduals will be participating in yoga/dance, music, and art. In the final performance the group will be doing dance pieces from Grease, Michael Jackson and other artists. They also will be displaying art pieces replicating the styles of Picasso and Pollock and learning their history. Please join us and watch the performance on March 18th at 1pm at the newly remodeled space in Abbey's.

Such is the case with Alternative Choices -- an independent health clinic in the Philadelphia-area. Within the clinic is the Special Needs Families Resource Center directed by Dr. Robert Naseef. Dr. Naseef is a nationally renowned autism expert and father to a young man with autism spectrum disorder. His also the author Special Children, Challenged Parents and co-author of Voices from the Spectrum. Dr. Naseef gives presentations all over the country and will becoming to Canandaigua soon! J-Mac to speak and sign autobiography in Geneva

Ontario ARC is sponsoring a free autism symposium featuring Jason "J-Mac" McElwain -- a young man with autism who is most famous for his 2006 game at Athena-Greece High School, where he scored 20 points in less than three minutes. J-Mac and his father, David, will speak about the game that changed everything and life with autism. J-Mac will also be available to sign copies of his autobiography, The Game of My Life: A True Story of Challenge, Triumph, and Life with Autism. In addition, a panel of local experts -- including our own Maggi Sullivan, the agency's autism coordinator -- will discuss autism spectrum disorders and host a question and answer session.

The event is a part of the Geneva Reads project -- a series of community events based around books to promote literacy in the community. This series revolves around The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.

Cartridges for Kids

This month, the individuals worked very hard to collect lots and lots of computer and printer cartridges around the campus.

We have numerous collection boxes around the campus. Once everyone returned from gathering the cartridges, we prepare and package them for shipping. Many people on the campus are glad to get rid of their cartridges and say thank you, when we collect them.

When the box is ready for shipping, we call Fed Ex and they come and pick up the package. In a couple weeks we will receive a check for the work we did.

The checks aren't a lot of money, but we put them toward a group activity that we agree on.

The whole process takes about 2-3 hours to complete.

Recently, we invited Lynn Bessell, Administrative Coordinator at the Eberhardt Center to speak with us about the process of buying a home. Our monthly theme this month is Home of your own, so we thought we would try something new and learn a bit about Real Estate.

Lynn works as a part time realtor for Realty USA and she was kind enough to invite a few friends with her from 1st Priority Mortgage. The ladies handed out packets explaining the process and answered questions we had prepared for them. They made a difficult process a lot easier to explain. We really appreciated Lynn’s help and the friends we made in our community.

Community Experience gets a visit from its new four-legged friend

The Community Experience had a special visit from some new friends at the Ontario County Sheriff's Department -- Deputy Pat Fitzgerald, his 7 year old German Sheppard Frankie and Sgt. Greg Shaffer. Deputy Fitzgerald spoke to the group about Frankie and how she is used for finding illegal drugs, protecting people and locating people. Frankie is from the Czech Republic, like our other furry friend Daphne, another dog from K-9 unit. Deputy Fitzgerald explained how he and Frankie started working together and how she was trained. The group got the chance to pet Frankie as she is very gentle and well trained. Deputy Fitzgerald explained that Frankie would be retiring in the next couple years because German Sheppards are in active duty until they are approximately 9-10 years old. The Community Experience will be baking a new batch of dog treats for the K-9 unit and visiting them again soon.

Happy Birthday, Ann!

Who doesn't love a birthday party? What isn't there to love? Cake, frosting, singing, candles and being surrounded by friends, family and all the people you love -- those are all things that bring a serious smile to even the most grumpiest of faces.

Sarah gives Ann a hug and rose during Wednesday's festivities.

Ann Lupo -- an agency volunteer through the Senior Companion program -- recently celebrated her 90th birthday. And to mark this special occassion, our Canandaigua-based community learning centers threw her a surprise birthday party inviting her Ontario ARC friends and family. Participants got together to make a healthy lunch of spaghetti and meatballs and decorated the tables with angel centerpieces.

We don't just have birthday parties for anyone -- Ann is a great friend to the agency. Her volunteer efforts give individuals in our programs the opportunity to one-on-one time in the community It also allows our staff to find more activities tailored to meet the needs and wants of participants. She is much loved by both staff and participants at the Congregational Church Community Learning Center.

Community Experience visits K-9 Unit

The Community Experience has been given a great opportunity to learn more about the K9 units for the Ontario County Sheriffs Office by making dog treats and getting to know each dog and their handler. We attended the Sheriff Deputies Road Patrol roll call on December 16th where we handed out our first batch of bacon flavored dog treats. The individuals had a great time shopping for the ingredients, mixing and rolling out the dough and cutting them out in the shapes of bells and hearts. We also got to meet with Sgt. Greg Schaffer, Officer Brian Lazarus and Daphne a 3 year old German Shepard from the Czech Republic. We learned about how the dogs are trained and what exactly they are used for such as finding people or illegal substances. Daphne is used for both. The K-9 Unit will be coming to our room to demonstrate different techniques and obedience commands after the New Year. We are all eager to see the Officers and dogs again.

Fitness Fair with the HWS Students

As part of a final research project for the disability class, wtih Mary Kelly, the HWS college students and our College Experience group worked together to host a Fitness Fair at the Field House.

Everyone was very excited to have other Ontario ARC Community Learning Centers, The FLCC College Experience, and programs from the Steuben ARC all attend.

There were different sessions everyone could attend, these included Zumba, Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, make your own water bottles, a raffle table and a snack table.

It was a great success! The best part was seeing so much inclusion!

FLCC College Experience helps HWS student

Recently, we met a college student named Hannah Stoll from HWS College. Hannah is a senior this year and is majoring in Sociology. Hannah had heard about our work we have done through the Creative Expression program out of Eberhardt Center and asked us if we would be interested in talking about our passion for the arts for a research project she is doing for her education, Disability and Transition class.
Hannah came out to our site recently and interviewed us on camera about how we feel when given the opportunity to express ourselves through music and art. Her project is called Self Advocacy through Art. We really enjoyed helping her and look forward to seeing the film she did.

Gift wrapping and galore!

As you probably already know, the agency's annual Holiday Gift Wrappnig Booth is in full swing at Eastview Mall in Victor. More than 400 volunteers have already or will donate their time to help Ontario ARC raise money for its new Autism Center and ongoing autism initiative for children, teens and adults with autism spectrum disorders.

This month-long fundraiser -- which ends at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve -- is alot of hard work. Thank you to all of our volunteers and sponsors, who make the event so successful.

Respect is more than just as word

Ontario ARC has seven Values words that shape everything we do. From developing new programs, to teaching our staff, and even how we interact with not only each other but the people we serve. We even have a Values Committee to help promote and encourage the values.

Respect just happens to one of the seven words. It helps guides the agency in several areas -- most importantly, in the form of people-first language. People with any kind of disability are just that -- people. And while agencies like Ontario ARC and others of our kind have made more than just strides over the past fifty years, there is still work to be done. We've featured a lot content and information about the "R-Word" on the blog and how hurtful the word can be. This morning, The Arc of The US's Facebook page featured a video about the R-Word from The Arc of NJ.

Tis' the season! Christmas shopping is one of my favorite things about the holiday season. I love the "hunt" of finding the perfect present for each one of my friends and family. But, sometimes it can be a little difficult to find that gift. Fortunately lots of stores on fancy schmancy InterWeb offer wish lists as well as gift guides and suggestions.

Each year, Toys R Us offers a gift guide for Differently-Abled Kids -- designed to help parents, family members and friends find the perfect gift for children who have a cognitive, physical or developmental disability. The toy store breaks it down into different categories to help a child enhance specific skills, including auditory, gross motor, social, tactile, creative, and language. Each category breaks it down further, so Web visitors can look at gifts based on age, gender, price and brand. It is a great way to find that perfect present or get ideas to find it.

Volunteering is vital to our community

Volunteers are vital to Ontario County -- there are many places their skills, time and talent are needed. I know on our part, the agency is fortunate to have a strong base of neighbors and friends that give their time to raise funds, wrap gifts and improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities. But, we don't take their commitment for granted. Our staff and participants also give back through volunteering throughout the county. Our Community Learning Centers are no exception.

Recently, Thompson Hospital hosted its annual banquet to thank its many volunteers. Brenda Covell (right) was honored with a pin commemorating 100 hours of volunteering at the hospital. Brenda works at the agency's community learning center located in the First Congregational Church. She takes several of the center's participants -- including Christine Stewart (left) -- to help with seniors during Bingo every Tuesday. She is dedicated and committed to not only improving her volunteer work, but to sharing their passion with both staff and participants at the agency.

"She is a hard working and dedicated staff member and we are grateful to have her on our team," Christin Lersch added when she was telling me about the award.

Talent, patience & origami

Talent can be a beautiful thing -- especially when that talent comes in the form of art.

Meet Mike. By day, he is a member of the agency's MacoBag crew. By night, he uses his creative talents to work and makes beautiful paper origami pieces called Japanese kusudama, also known as origami medicine balls.

Mike has a variety of colorful papers he uses to make these beautiful flower balls. A small one -- like the one I purchased on the left at the agency's annual craft fair -- takes about three and half hours to put together. I can't even imagine the time behind a medium or large one. Not only is Mike talented, he also has more patience that anyone I know.

His table was one of the most crowded at the craft fair. Looking at the picture above, you'll notice the small flower balls attached to his table. By the time I left, only three or four of those were left. Many were snagging them up to give away as holiday gifts.

Congrats to Mike for his success at today's craft fair!

FLCC College Student, Laura Day was a guest speaker in our room to talk about her life experiences dealing with Spinal Bifida and using a wheelchair. Laura graduated from high school and was undecided on what to do with the rest of her life so she decided to try college. Laura will graduate this December from FLCC with a degree in Communications. Laura also spoke about her accomplishments of getting her driving license and her first car.
The most amazing thing we learned about Laura is she participates in wheel chair sports. Laura is on a track and field team out of Rochester called the Rochester Rookies. She competes in National and Regional events throughout the summer and is a Nationals record holder in Discus and the Javelin. The best advice she said she could give us was to, “Never be afraid to ask for help”.

Festival of Trees

The Community Experience recently donated a country themed christmas tree to the Granger Homestead's Festival of Trees. The Granger Homestead has held the Festival of Trees for the past 14 years and people through out the community attend and vote on their favorite tree. Viewing will be from November 12th through December 5th. The individuals in the Community Experience decorated a 2 foot pre-lit tree with home-made ornaments. The individuals made cinnamon decorations using only applesauce and cinnamon, mixing to a dough consistency and used cookie cutters in the shapes of stars, bells and hearts. The ornaments were air dried and made the room smell wonderful. They also strung cranberries on string and made stockings out of cloth. The tree was topped with a wooden star. Stop in and vote for your favorite tree at The Granger Homestead.

The IPad has been mentioned in tons of stories recently for its ability to engage people with autism and help individuals with disabilities. I've noted a few in the blog's weekly "News Round Up," which features stories about people with developmental disabilities and other issues. Below is a video from the NY Times that chronicles the story of Owen -- a seven year old boy living in New York with spinal muscular atrophy, type 1 -- and how the IPad has changed his life.

The HWS College Experience group along with some HWS students wanted to come up with a project that they could work on together. Everyone agreed on making winter fleece hats for the Sit-A-Spell and Geneva Senior CLCs.

The group bought different patterns of fleece, some appropriate for the ladies others for the gentlemen. Everyone worked very carefully on cutting the patterns and then staff helped with sewing them together.

In all there were 32 hats made. As you can see by the pictures, everyone was glad to have their new hats!

The challenges for families and individuals

Every once in a while, I flip on NPR for my drive home to catch All Things Considered. And while to some people, this might make me a dork -- I actually really enjoy listening to the news and hearing about stories that you don't typically hear or see on your usual newscasts. When I changed to the station yesterday, this is what I heard:

You've probably never seen a person hooked up to so many plastic tubes as Olivia Welter. There's a ventilator tube that keeps her breathing. There's a feeding tube that's also the tube for her dozen or so medicines. There are the tubes to the vibrating vest that loosens the mucus in her lungs. Another tube to help her cough. The tube that her nurse uses a couple times an hour to suction the mucus out of her mouth.

It was just the beginning of Olivia's -- a 20-year-old woman living in Illinois -- story, the stories of other individuals with disabilities and their daily challenges. It also chronicles the fight of Olivia's family to keep her at home and continue to receive the level of care she needs.

What is Rotaract?

The Rotaract Club on the HWS campus is very similar to the Rotary clubs in your communities. This club is currently working to be a part of the Geneva Rotary. The Rotaract Club does lots of different community service projects in the Geneva area.

Some of the Rotaract Club members attend the same Transition class that the HWS College Experience individuals attend. While talking in class one day, it was agreed upon that the College Experience would really like to participate in some of the Rotaract activites.

This month both groups came together to make many creative Halloween cards. The cards will be distributed through the Geneva Living Centers, North and South. Everyone agreed that they were glad to make the patients day a bit brighter by sending them the cards.

The groups plan to get together to make Thanksgiving day cards.

Keeping the heartbeat going

The staff at Ontario ARC are a very important part of the agency's mission and vision. They are on the front lines everyday providing high quality services and making sure that each of the individuals we serve has the supports they need to live a full life. And the agency works very hard to make sure that each member of its staff has the tools they need to do this.

Last week, the agency's programs -- with the exception of the Eberhardt Center -- were closed for the day. Not because of Columbus Day -- we are 24/7 operation for the most part. Staff from the Community Experience, College Experience programs, and Community Learning Centers gathered at Steamboat Landing for a full day of training and team building activities.

Staff got refreshers on Q-Straints (Val Colombo & Transportation), HIPPA / Corporate Compliance (Brenda Estey, associate executive director), Waivers / OPTS / Petty Cash (Karen Niedermier, internal auditor), and 147's (Barb Davis, director of staff development and quality assurance). In addition, Mike Kephart and Tonya Finn from the agency's clinical team gave a presentation called "Expecting Independence v. Parental Caretaker role." But, it was all serious business. The team also got the chance to learn some new exercises and do a scavenger hunt.

Our trainers and training programs are what keeps the heartbeat of Ontario ARC going. Not only does it keep us in compliance, but it ensures that each individual receives high quality services. So, what could be more important than that?

Kudos to Ann Scheetz, Julie Dunn, Wendy Nelson, and Richard Thomas for a great day of training!

Residential Camp a success!

Anyone who truly enjoys the "great outdoors" needs to come visit the Finger Lakes region. We have some magnificent scenery, beautiful sunsets, and picturesque lakes. It's no wonder that outdoor activities -- swimming, camping, hiking, biking, etc. -- are hugely popular. And for the past three years, Ontario ARC has capitalized on the beauty of the area by hosting a three-day camp for individuals living in our residential program.

For three days, campers get to enjoy the outdoors by participating in wide variety of activities. From canoeing to hiking and even arts and crafts -- nobody leaves without a smile! And, its all in part to our terrific staff, who work tirelessly throughout to ensure that everyone happy.

Scarecrow Contest 2010

Ontario ARC's Community Experience participated in the 2010 Scarecrow Contest. The Canandaigua Business Improvement District organizes the contest, which is currently display throughout the streets and sidewalks of historic Canandaigua all of October. The Community Experience made a hippie scarecrow named “Bubba”. All 12 individuals help personalize Bubba, who has long black hair with words written on his clothes such as "peace", "love", and "happiness." He also has patches on his pants and large sunglasses. Stop by and see “Bubba” and all the other scarecrows!

Rochester honors employers during National Disability Employment Awarness Month

Eight hours can either go really quickly or drag on for days. Work is an important part of our lives -- we spend half of our estimated waking hours there. For some people, you see your coworkers more often than you see your significant other, children or other family members. Not only does it pay the bills and put food on the table, but it can help boost confidence and impart a sense of pride.

This is especially true for people with disabilities. To help support the people we serve at the agency, Ontario ARC has developed a unique model for assisting people with disabilities succeed in the workforce. We've developed strong relationships with businesses and organizations throughout the Rochester and Finger Lakes areas to create job opportunities. And recently, we had the chance to nominate our good friends at F.F. Thompson Hospital and Bonadio Group for the Rochester Area Employment Network's Annual Employer Awards. And, the best part? They won! F.F. Thompson Hospital won the 2010 Regional Award for National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Bonadio Group was the winner of the 2010 Local Award for National Disability Employment Month.

Victor Yoga Studio to raise funds for agency

Yoga is not only relaxing -- it can be very renewing. Its a great way to unwind from a crazy day and prepare yourself for the crazier day ahead.

On Oct. 22, our friends at the Victor Yoga Studio will host a 65-minute Karma Vinyasa Restorative Yoga class with Amy Warcup at 6:30 p.m. It is a donation-based class and all proceeds go towards the agency and its autism initiative. The studio recommends a suggested contribution of $10-$16.

The class will begin with 45 minutes of heat-building vinyasa practise, followed by 25 minutes of relaxing and open restorative yoga. Vinyasa is breathing synchronized movements -- typically a series of poses done in a sequence. It's a great way to try something new, unwind from a week of work, and support Ontario ARC.

Agency to host "Benefit Basics" seminar on Oct. 19

Social Security and Supplement Security Income can be very intimidating -- but very important for people with developmental disabilities. Not only does it help financially, but it can provide a sense of security for the individual and their family.

To help you through this process, Ontario ARC will host an educational seminar -- "Benefit Basics -- on Oct. 19 at its Main Facility. The seminar will feature speakers from the Western New York Advocacy for the Developmentally Disabled (WNYADD) -- including Roger Nellist, WNYADD's executive director, and Jennifer Blais, WNYADD's benefits specialist. Nellist and Blais will cover topics such as eligibility, how to apply for benefits, and how other resources and employment can affect your benefits. In addition, the night will include a social hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation starting 7 p.m. Not only is it educational, but it is a great networking opportunity as well.

BT's 9th annual Halloween Bash!

I don't know if anyone else noticed -- but the Halloween candy and costumes were out early this year! Summer wasn't even over and I saw a whole aisle dedicated to the October holiday in a local store. Now, it has really kicked in and I can hear people buzzing in the hall ways here at Ontario ARC about their plans for the upcoming holiday -- especially from one person in particular.

Every year, Bob Taddario -- known in these parts as just "BT" -- hosts his annual Halloween Bash at The Sons of Italy in Geneva. BT is a substitute enclave supervisor and works closely with participants, helping them achieve their professional goals while on the job. For his annual Halloween celebration, he books great rock bands, tarrot card readers, and fun "tribute" guests, such as Flavor Flav, Elvira, and Linda Blair from The Exorcist.

Each year, Congress and the President of the United State mark October as National Disability Employment Month -- providing a "renewal" focus on increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the country. In addition, 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) -- a landmark piece of legislation that worked to ensure equality for people with disabilities.

Museum of disAbility History

I love going to museums -- I find them to be absolutely fascinating, like an extremely large, building-sized time capsules that gives us a glimpse into the stories and lives of people from other times. As a child, I was able to visit museums in various cities -- Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C -- thanks to my father's line of work. I'm always on the lookout for interesting museums to visit -- from the fun and playful (such as the Jello Museum in LeRoy) or the serious and historical (like the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto).

Today, I found another one to add to my list -- the Museum of disAbility History in Buffalo, NY. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and display artifacts that speak to the history of people with developmental disabilities.

The great thing about this museum is that if you aren't heading out to Buffalo anytime it is available in a virtual format online, where it focuses on Media, Medicine, Society, Education, Advocacy, and New York State. Why specific to New York State? It's funded by a grant from great people at the B. Thomas Golisano Foundation and People, Inc.

But, if you are traveling to the Buffalo area, I highly recommend you stop by the museum, which is having its grand re-opening on Oct. 15. According to it's Web site, the Museum of disAbility History is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment.

Congrats, Ike!

Ike Ditzenberger -- a 17-year old student at Snohomish High School in Washington state-- scored his team's only touchdown during a Sept. 24 game against Lake Stevens. He ran 51 yards with ten seconds remaining on the clock. The play -- called The Ike Special -- is below.

If you are anything like me -- meaning you aren't sure what a "first down" is and think football is played in innings -- the story appears to be a replay of a typical high school game. But, what makes this story so special is that Ike has Down syndrome.

Ike practices every day with his team mates and is on the school's junior varsity roster. He joins the varsity team's practice for their last plays. In addition, he hopes to join the school's wrestling team.

Congress eliminates the "R-word" from health, education, and labor laws

In a victorious move for people with developmental disabilities, the House of Representatives has approved a bill that eliminates the "R-word" in federal government language. The bill -- also known as Rosa's Law -- changes the language from "mental retardation" to "intellectual disability," bringing it up to par with language used at the CDC, U.N. and the White House.

Proposed by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), the bill was named after Rosa Marcellino -- a girl from Maryland with Down syndrome. After she was labeled "retarded" by her school, her mother Nina teamed up with other parents to change the terminology in Maryland's state law.

“The Marcellinos’ story is a perfect example of effective citizen advocacy. They pulled together to pull us all to another way of thinking,” Senator Mikulski said. “The bipartisan support of this bill shows that this is an issue where we can tip our hats to boys and girls with intellectual disabilities by checking our party hats at the door.”

The bill will now go to President Barack Obama's desk for his signature.

Unique Opportunity at HWS

Mary Kelly, PhD, our liason, developed the class Transition and Disability: Life after high school. This allows the college students and the ARC individuals to be integrated in a class together, for the first time.

The ARC individuals are broken into groups with the college students. They have to participate, present and do all the homework that is expected of the HWS students. There are field trips, discussions, service learning projects, and various collaborative activies inside and outside the classroom.

Each and every individual is so pleased with themselves when they leave class, it is such a great feeling to see the inclusion on the HWS campus.

Toronto Film Festival alert!

Cruisin' for a Cause was a success!!

The agency raised more than $62,000 for programs and services at its 18th annual Cruisin' for a Cause, held at Steamboat Landing on Aug. 19. More than 500 local residents turned out to enjoy some delicious barbeque picnic-style foods, snag some great live and silent auction packages and ride the Canandaigua Lady (left).

Shout out to the Cruisin' for a Cause committee who worked tirelessly this year to ensure we had the best event ever!

Ontario ARC participates in The Alzheimer Association's Memory Walk

Staff and participants kicked off the start of Ontario ARC's Walk for Life by joining the Alzheimer Association in its annual Memory Walk on Sept. 11 in Canandaigua. The team received the walk's second place award in the Corporate Team category for the money they raised.

Sponsored by the agency's Wellness Committee -- a group of staff who encourage health and wellness initatives throughout Ontario ARC -- Walk for Life will run for 8 week this fall.

Kudos to team captains Shelly Turner and Lynn Bessell.

The Eberhardt Center turns 20!

They grow up so quickly don't they?

The Eberhardt Center left its teen years behind and turned 20 on Sept. 13. To commemorate this milestone in the agency's history, participants from the Eberhardt Center released 20 blue and yellow balloons into the sky. Bill C., Joe Bognanno (board president), Noreen Quinn (senior associate executive director) and members from the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce said a few words each to mark the occasion. Staff and participants from across the agency came together to enjoy a delicious chicken barbeque picnic.

Ontario ARC's Annual Chapter Meeting and Open House

The agency also hosted its annual chapter meeting on Sept. 13. Outgoing Board President Joe Bognanno gave a review of agency highlights milestones from the past year. In addition, the agency welcomed new Board President Lynne Erdle and new director Marie O'Horo.

In addition, staff presented information about Ontario ARC's wide variety of programs, services, supports and activities. Some were new -- like our enhanced employment services and autism services. Others just needed a reintroduction -- like our transition services, services coordination, and events table.

So, as you can see -- its been crazy around Ontario ARC! We'll keep doing our best to keep you informed about all that is going on -- both here and in the field of developmental disabilities.

FLCC College Experience volunteers for the Alzheimer Memory Walk

We were approached by Jody Thomas, Coordinator of Aging Services for ARC, to see if we would be interested in baking mini muffins for the upcoming Alzheimer Memory walk on Sept. 11th. Because we love to volunteer, we jumped on this opportunity to use one of our cooking days to try a nice healthy recipe for zucchini muffins. We used the kitchen at the Risser Road IRA house and each individual had a small part in baking the finished product. We had a great time and look forward to our next volunteer opportunity.

Giving back at Crosswinds Church

On Friday Septemeber 10, Kristen L. And Robert G. and myself went to volunteer at Crosswinds Wesleyan Church in Canandaigua. The church was having a training for it's sunday school teachers last weekend. We were asked to put together a training book and then put it along with an evaluation sheet and a pen into a bright orange bag for all attendees to recieve. We had a good time. We met Angie from the church and she was very excited to have us there to help her get ready. We hope to help them again in the future.

FLCC College Experience and the Community Experience volunteer for the Seniors Picnic!

Everyone at Ontario ARC try to live by our value words and put them into practice. On Friday, Aug. 27, the FLCC College Experience and the Community Experience individuals demonstrated one of our value words, being Teamwork by assisting at the Ontario ARC Aging picnic.

The Ontario ARC Aging Services and the Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua sponsored a senior’s picnic at Ontario ARC in the pavilion. Area seniors came from around the community to eat lunch, play games and enjoy music and good company.

We were not the only volunteers helping at the picnic. The Aktion Club, a division of the Kiwanis Club, and the Aging Advisory Panel, a committee made up of Individuals and community members advocating for our aging individuals in the agency also joined the volunteers. We all worked together in set up/clean up, manning the games, assisting seniors and socializing with everyone. We all really enjoyed spending our afternoon in the presence of some great people and look forward to helping next year.

Community Centers 1st Annual Picnic

In early August, all of Ontario ARC's Community Learning Centers and the College and Community programs gathered in Clifton Springs for the first annual CLC picnic.

There were many fun activites for the everyone to participate in. Some made sun visors, some had strawberry shortcake, and some went "fishing" for gold fish. The HWS College Experience hosted a face painting booth. Sarah and Jenny were great artists and did many tattoos for people.
Everyone is looking forward to next year!

Community Experience Volunteers

On July 22, the Community Experience group helped Speak Up, Speak Out! The Self Advocacy Group of Ontario County with their car wash fundraiser.

We began helping long before the actual day came by making little potpourri sacks to be hung on the rear view mirror. On the day of the event, we passed these out to each patron after their car was washed. We also helped set up all the supplies needed, collected the donations and washed lots of cars.

Monday
Ontario ARC was featured in the Daily Messenger -- right on the front page! Reporter Mike Maslanik recently visited the agency to speak with Matt, Scott and Jeff, who recently completed the College Experience program at FLCC. Each young man has already found employment. I won't give away the whole story -- read the rest for yourself!

Wendesday
News 8 reporter Meghan Backus visited Marty Becker -- a member of the agency's crew at Maco Bag. Marty had a heart attack during his lunch break at work back in April. And, thanks to quick thinking and reaction from Emily Stohner -- Ontario ARC's enclave supervisor at Maco Bag -- Marty is already back to work.

Thursday was -- hands down -- the busiest day this week.


Dan Prong gets splashed by David H.

First up, the Eberhardt Center put on its annual carnival -- which was an absolute blast. Both participants and staff made it out to enjoy the great weather and fun activities.

Music, games -- such as a ring toss and bowling -- and some sweet treats filled the parking lot. In addition, pet therapy, massages, and a "tattoo" parlor was available for use.

A big shout out goes to the Eberhardt Center's Et Al Committee for their hard work and great planning!

Speak Up, Speak Out! Ontario County's Self Advocacy Group held its annual car wash at the Main Facility from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the proceeds go towards the group's various activities throughout the year. The group's hard work definitely paid off! Congrats to the group for their success!

Last, but certainly not least, our good friends at Roseland Waterpark donated all of the proceeds from its "Dunk a Lifeguard" booth to Ontario ARC! I won't spill all the details -- you'll have to read Becky Castano's post about how the HWS College Experience crew helped out. But, certainly a big THANK YOU goes out to Roseland Waterpark for thinking of the agency and donating its proceeds from the booth that day!!

So... as you can see...Ontario ARC is never lacking in the "things to do" department. Especially this week.

HWS College Experience visits Roseland Waterpark to raise money for agency

On Thursday, Roseland Waterpark's "Dunk a Lifeguard" booth raised money for Ontario ARC's Recreation program. Shirley Wells, community habilitation assistant, along with Ron and Sarah encouraged spectators and people walking by to step on up and dunk the life guard!!

Ron said that it was a lot of fun and wouldn't have minded being dunked himself. Sarah said that there were a lot of people and not everyone was able to hit the bullseye.

"Difference Makers" to recognize direct support professionals in New York State

Parent to Parent of New York State has teamed up with the Direct Support Professional Alliance of New York State to recognized "Difference Makers" -- an initiative to recognize direct support professionals, who have truly made a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. "Difference Makers" will be awarded quarterly to direct support professionals nominated by family and friends.
